A defamation lawsuit has been filed against Nasiruddin Patwari, Chief Coordinator of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), for making “offensive remarks” concerning Robiul Islam Nayan, Member Secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan South Juba Dal (BNP’s youth wing).
The case was filed on Monday (November 3rd) at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court by a Juba Dal leader named Kazi Mukituzzaman.
Allegations in the Lawsuit
The lawsuit alleges that following the fall of the “fascist government” on August 5th, the accused, Nasiruddin Patwari, has been deliberately and purposefully engaging in false, fabricated, misleading, and defamatory propaganda on social media and in the mass media. The goal of this campaign is to damage the reputation and socially demean the leaders and the party (BNP) that led the movement.
The case description highlighted the specific statements made by the NCP leader on November 1st regarding Juba Dal leader Nayan:
Nasiruddin Patwari allegedly stated: “A big party is resorting to hooliganism over the July Charter. There is a leader in Dhaka Metropolitan named Nayan; the amount of extortion and corruption he alone has committed is enough money to finance a referendum in Bangladesh. We tried to cleanse them with Zamzam water for so long, but their heads and bodies weren’t cleansed. Now, I think they need to be cleansed with water from the Buriganga [River].”
The application asserts that such comments are defamatory and damage the image of the youth society, including the BNP.
Earlier, the Juba Dal had already issued a protest against Nasiruddin Patwari’s statement.
